As experienced registered nurses with over 15 years of working in various hospital settings across Detroit, MI, Dallas, TX, and Fresno, CA, we have observed a concerning trend that remains consistent across different regions. Specifically, homelessness has a detrimental impact on individuals' health status. This is due to the lack of access to fundamental necessities such as shelter, food, clean water, and medical care that homeless individuals face. Living in crowded conditions and lacking access to basic hygiene facilities increase their vulnerability to infectious diseases.
We have seen how homelessness can contribute to an individual's mental health issues, including stress, anxiety, and depression, due to the lack of stability and security that comes with not having a home. We have also noticed that homeless individuals often have chronic health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and asthma, which can exacerbate due to the lack of access to regular medical care and a healthy lifestyle. Not only is their hospital stay complex, but their discharge from the hospital normally takes longer due to being homeless.
Seeing all these challenges homeless individuals have to go through, we founded Sheltering Hands LLC which provides a safe and stable environment for individuals who might otherwise be living on the streets or in unsafe and unstable situations. Our goal is to bridge the gap between homelessness and permanent housing as our residents work toward stability and independence.
Sincerely,
David and Claudette
